Hogar History
The Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrow institute is a Congregation
of Papal Right born in Italy in the year of 1839.
Their founder, Elisabetta Renzi, is a devout woman of noble origin
that decided to dedicate her life to educating girls and young ladies
of small towns in post-napoleonic time.
From the beginning the Institute took on a responsibility of fulfilling
human needs, with the same unconditional love as Jesus Christ: The
children, the poor, the abandoned ones, the weak ones and the needy.
Dedicated to the educational and Apostolate assistance, our charisma
is summarized in the phrase "Ardere et Lucere" (Burn to
illuminate) we consume ourselves away in our service.
The Casa Hogar (House Home) Villa Francisco Javier Nuño was
founded in November of 1980 under the initiative of the first Bishop
of the Diocese in San Juan de los Lagos. It is in his honor that
the house takes its name.
The chronicle narrates that in San Juan de los Lagos there was a
boy approximately 8 years of age named Alejandro that slept in the
streets of town. It is said that the Bishop Nuño worried
of his security and knowing that this was a concern in his district.
He expressed to people near him his desire to create an institution
that would offer children of the streets an opportunity to grow
in a healthy environment, with education and principles that would
transform them into independent and autonomous people.
The Bishop realizing that the Diocese had a piece of land in Tepatitlán,
they soon requested the service of a Priest of North American origin
as well as the presence of the nuns of Our Lady of Sorrows Congregation
to take care of the children.
The congregations designated Sisters Gianfranca Casadei, Lea Pignatta,
and Rita Baldassarre, nuns of Italian origin. They were appointed
to the new cause which began with a dozen children in a small rented
house.
A few days after they began constructing Casa Hogar in this city
of Tepatitlán de Morelos, Jalisco, Mexico. Little by little
the house on Marcelino Champagnat street No13, was built with the
efforts of many generous towns’ people as well as contributors
from the United States and Italy.
From the beginning we have remained thankful to our contributers
that are supporting us economically and graciously offering their
services free of charge.
On June 13th 1981, with the house still far from being functional,
the children and nuns moved into a completed portion. As the construction
continued the family slowly grew starting with only 12 children.
We are currently assisting 110 children, adolescents and young adults,
from surrounding towns and states.
Our children come from the streets and/or families without resources,
partial or no family ties and personal experiences marked by pain.
With us they can build a new personal reality filled with projects
for the future. Thanks to the kindness of our Excmo. Bishop Javier
Navarro Rodríguez and the generosity of benefactors, our
children and youths receive all necessary services to achieve hormony
and integral development in a gratuitous way.
At the moment, Casa Hogar’s administration is controlled by
the Congregation of Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows, who offer their
services without economic retribution. This involves managing all
household business, which includes diverse activities such as running
the kitchen, laundry, gardening, cleaning etc. We have no external
workers for these activities, except for our "handy man"
who carries out various tasks including maintaining electrician
services, plumbing and other household utilities.
